Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is like the heart of the country. It’s a city of contrasts, where the past and the present share a stormy relationship. Spectacular architectural masterpieces, especially old Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries strike a sharp contrast against the present-day chaos of traffic-clogged streets and an ever-expanding mass of humanity. For a taste of history and some delightful shopping escapades, head to the Old Quarter. The different markets here offer a sea of choice to souvenir hunters. To feast your eyes upon architectural marvels dating back to the 11th century, stroll down Durbar Square and explore interesting old structures built by master architects of different royal dynasties.

Among the religious attractions, some of the most famous sites are the Bhasmeshvar Ghats (cremation center on the banks of the River Bagmati), Pashupatinath Temple (the main temple is off-limits to non-Hindus), the UNESCO site of Boudhanath Temple, and the Monkey Temple or Swayambhunath Stupa.
